Non-toxic Ant Bait

May 12, 2014 07:00

Has anyone here used the powdered sugar/baking soda method of killing ants?  I used to do the boric acid/honey long ago, but with three curious cats I had to put it out of their reach, so it was not very effective.

If ants are coming in through the cracks of doors and windows, pour a line of cream of tartar where they enter the house, and they will not cross over it. A cinnamon stick, coffee grinds, chili pepper, paprika, cloves, or dried peppermint leaves near the openings will repel ants. You can also squeeze the juice of a lemon at the entry spot and leave the peel there. Planting mint around the foundation of the house will also keep ants away. Place cloves of garlic around indoor and outdoor ant pathways.

The ants are coming in from multiple locations where I can't get to (mainly behind cabinets, dishwasher, and the bathroom floor); although the deterrents help (I've tried many of the ones you suggested), I still find them in the house, just in other areas. I've used ant bait before (natural and non-natural methods), and I deal with them for a week or three and then they are no more. The sugar/BS mixture should be effective against the ants, and not bother the cats too much should they decide to try it out.

Diatomaceous earth is the stuff to use; it's totally non-toxic, cheap, and works like a charm.

This is what my husband and I use as well. You can actually sprinkle it right around the outside of the house to keep them from getting inside, too.
