Cold Sore/Fever Blister

Apr 06, 2013 15:00

I have a recurring fever blister/cold sore. I had it back in November and this morning it started again in the exact same spot. Last time it took something like three months to go away and that was with using the Abreva stuff my doctor suggested. I really don't want this thing around that long! Any suggestions of the natural variety?

Thanks!

I hate using abreva, I don't think it's effective at all.

I get cold sores frequently. When I start getting the tingles, I start taking lysine, which seems to help shorten the duration.

I personally pop mine if they get to the bubbly stage. I know a lot of people say not to, but I think they heal faster, and they don't look as gross. I crunch up an aspirin and make a paste with a little water and leave it on the sore at night, during the day I use either "super lysine plus" which I've found at my local CVS/Walgreens/etc, or I just use carmex.

i'll have to go track down some lysine as a couple of you have suggested that here. Unfortunately i can't do anything with asprin as i'm very allergic.

Oo I do have tea tree oil around here. I've used it on other things. Thanks for suggesting it for this!

I agree with everything said here, except for popping the blister. I've read that popping a blister can actually lead to more smaller blisters forming and also counteracts the body's healing process.

But definitely get ice on it as soon as you can, because basically as soon as it starts to tingle that means the virus is spreading and if you ice it, some of the cells will numb and therefore the virus won't be able to spread.

Also lysine is a great suggestion, as someone else mentioned. (:

Abreva doesn't work at all for me either. I do everything mentioned here except the salt. I also take lysiene every day as a preventative measure and it seems to work well.

Weird that abreva doesn't work for others. I put it on the second I feel tingling or see a red spot and it never ever develops all the way. I used to get them a few times a year but haven't in at least 3 yrs now.

bone broth (especially fish based), sunshine and vitamin d supplements (if you live where there's not much sunshine right now).

also, adequate sleep and steady physical activity throughout the day. it's really an immune thing, and all this stuff keeps flare-ups down to a few days a year.
