Bicarb of Soda Uses

Jul 18, 2012 13:38

I have acquired a large, heavy bag of bicarbate of soda/Sodium bicarbonate/cooking soda/baking soda. So far a mug of it in the fridge hasn't helped much with smells and apart from that I use once a day to clean my face.

What are people's favourite uses of this as I have lots to use!

A paste of it will take away the sting of nettles. (Caused by formic acid. Basic chemistry.)

If left overnight sprinkled liberally in smelly shoes, the next morning they smell of nothing but clean leather. Luvverly.

This really works well. My stepson has the worst foot odor problem. It was so bad, he had to leave his shoes outside or the whole house would be permeated with the smell. Baking soda fixed it up!

Put a quarter cup of so in every load of laundry!

Wash your hair with it. (Be careful if you have dry scalp though.)

Use it in place of harsh abrasive cleansers

As many have said above, I use it in the laundry and for scouring/polishing various items.

I usually make a scouring paste of 1/2 cup soda, 1 Tablespoon liquid dish soap, 1 Tablespoon water. I keep this in a jar with a lid. This is great for many things, such as scouring wooden cutting boards, rubbing out coffee and tea stains in cups and pots, or soaking up and rubbing out stains from kitchen counters.
