what to do with empty pill bottles?

May 24, 2012 15:00

I've been going through a LOT of pill bottles over the last few years. It seems so wasteful to just throw them all out - especially the glass ones. Has anyone got any ideas for creative ways to re-purpose them?

recycle/reuse/reduce

I haven't tried this, but someone talked about taking their old prescription bottles to their vet's office to be reused. I guess the regulations are looser when it comes to animal prescriptions? Between my meds and my parents meds, we go through a ton of pill bottles every month and it frustrates me so much that they can't at least be refilled with the same prescription for the same person.

They can't? In my area, they will happily put your prescription in last month's bottle if you bring it in with you. I have it done at Walgreens.

I checked and it apparently varies from state to state, plus different policies at different pharmacies. I had been incorrectly operating under the assumption that it was illegal everywhere, so now I'm going to check around and see if mine can be reused.

as a seed collector I would not suggest you put your seeds in old bottles because the seals would keep any trapped moisture in and that would ruin your seeds use old tea boxes for seeds as for as old prescription bottles go check out this Chandelier made of re-purposed prescription bottles (^_^)b

It probably varies, but I've never had prescription pill bottles that sealed tightly enough to keep moisture in or out. Bottles designed for liquids, maybe, but not the pill bottles.

A lot of prescription pill bottles have two-way lids, one side that's childproof and one side that isn't. The childproof sides don't seal well, but the non-childproof side seals pretty tightly, in my experience.

My late husband was disabled, very ill, and on a lot of medications so I saw a lot of different kinds of pill bottles when he was alive.

I use old pill bottles to hold my many different beads - especially seed beads. You might check to see if there are any beading groups in your area or anyone who could use the bottles to store their beads. Medicine bottles are perfect for this.

My local animal shelter is always asking for them!

I feel sorry that you have to take so many pills! If you can reuse some of them for plants, scented oils, seeds, or storage - I like to use old jars and bottles to store leftover homemade sauce or dressing - you could always recycle them. I like the suggestions posted above as well.
