Coconut oil?

Right now I'm using Aveeno lotion, I love it but I'd like to go even more simple and natural for my skin care (and I found out that they do animal testing ~sigh). Everything seems to aggravate my dermatitis, even some "natural brand" lotions ( Read more... )

If I shave my legs and then itch a lot, I rub it on and it works well. I would say it really does the job and I never noticed increased rash or anything like that. I've never had a sense of it being heavy either, it soaks right in.

The only negative thing I have to say about coconut oil is that when I had a cold and was rubbing my lips and around my mouth raw from blowing my nose all the time, I rubbed coconut oil on, and after several weeks small bumps appeared on my skin. They were invisible and didn't itch, but if I put my hand on them I could feel them. I don't know why they appeared or why they had no bothersome qualities, but they did go away when I stopped rubbing on the oil.

I've been using coconut oil for two years as both a lotion and as a hair conditioner. I use it on my face specifically because it doesn't make me break out. Coconut oil works very well for me, unlike olive oil which, for me, is too heavy/greasy. I've read comments from others (can't recall if it was here or on another forum) that coconut oil makes them break out. Others have gotten better results from olive oil or jojoba oil. When using oils it seems to be a matter of experimenting until you find one that works best for you.

I've used it on my face in place of a moistouriser with no problems for about six months. It can take a little while to soak in is the only thing. Almond oil's meant to be good too. Also, interesting thing my sister found out recently (who uses the same coconut oil just fine with her sensitive skin btw) is that oil-y moistourisers don't make a good base for water-based foundation make up. Just thought that was really interesting when she told me, and worth the share!

I used coconut oil as a nighttime moisturizer for years (too shiny and heavy and sunscreen-less for the morning). I still use it to remove my eye makeup.
