Homemade corn-free cat food

Jul 12, 2011 10:10

Hi!  I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a corn-free pH balanced recipe for cats?  The pH balance is very important because my cats have a history of crystals in their urine.  Corn-free because one of my cats is allergic.  I'll run any suggestions by my vet before trying them.  Thanks ( Read more... )

Another vote for raw, prey-model diet :)

I would definitely consider a raw diet. I'm primarily looking into homemade because I'm having a hard time keeping up with the price of the pre-made food they've been eating. They haven't had any problems with it though. I've seen Evo at the feed store and I'll look into it.

Wysong Uretic. I am pretty psotive it does not have corn and it is ment for cats with urinary problems.
But I also vote for raw if you can afford it.

This. This. This.

I have one cat with FUS, and another who has food allergies. This food managed to tackle both problems and my other cat (who is a very picky eater) also likes it a lot. According to the company, this food was intended for multiple cats, but also serves quite well for preventing urine crystals. Also, if you ever need to call Wysong, they have excellent support.

Thanks! Do you know about how many cups are in the 4 lb bag and how moist the food is?

It's dry food but they have a wet food as well.

I am not sure how many cups are in a bag but I want to say 1 cat should you a month. So 2 cats half a month?

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area there is a place to buy 3 get 1 free.

This is the Cat Forum cat food recipe board, if you search around you'll probably get a lot of ideas:

And if you decide to try to go raw, I highly suggest looking at their raw feeding board:

Wow, thanks! There's a lot of information there. I asked my vet if he had any recipes and he didn't, but I will definitely consult with him before trying anything.

One of my cats had a history of crystals before I adopted him, and he's not had any problems in the 4 years he's been with me so far. I feed all of my cats a primarily meat-based diet, with a few green veggies here & there (as cats are carnivores by nature). I supplement with raw poultry hearts (high in taurine, an amino acid necessary for cats' health), and since I often cook the meat partially or entirely, I add calcium (Standard Process Calcifood), salmon oil, and another vitamin supplement (Standard Process Cyrofood ( ... )

Thank you! Those sites look like they will have the info I need.

I had Dr. Pitcairn's book once and I really liked it but my cat shredded it. He doesn't have any vets listed in my area, but our vet is at least open to the idea of homemade food.

I also found this site where a nutritionist will look at your cat's medical records and fax a recommended recipe to your vet. It's $250 though. http://petdiets.com/

I'm going to try Dr. Pierson's recipe using the extra-fine ground rabbit + additional chicken. I emailed her about my cats' situation and she got back to me right away. If this goes well, maybe I'll invest in a grinder. =)

I also found Dr. Pitcairn's book. It wasn't shredded as bad as I thought.
