My boyfriend's had a herniated disc and lumbar issues since February. He's gone the standard medical route cortisone injections/painkillers etc which worked for a while but he's had another flare-up yesterday and he's in lots of pain ( Read more... )

He needs to find a physical therapist or chiropractor who teaches McKenzie rehab exercises. The injections and painkillers help but he needs to learn enough about his spine and its function so that he's not making the issue worse and hopefully over time, makes it better.

Doctors don't want to do surgery unless it's a last resort.

Other than that find a yin/relaxation yoga class. Call the teacher in advance to let them know what he's dealing with. If you have other questions or just need someone to talk to, contact me.

No clue, I'm in Austin, TX. Call around about the McKenzie first. After that you can start looking for yoga therapy or yoga classes. For the yoga you might find someone who teaches Iyengar or Anusara. Just giving options.

I'm sorry, I know you posted this to a natural community, but felt the need to share he may want to see if Cymbalta is an option. I'm 22, have had a lumbar injury turn bulging disk since highschool, was taking 32,000mg of ibuprofen a day, tried that med and it's helped.
