Chai mix?

Feb 23, 2011 11:06

I just came across a nearly full carton of chai tea mix (to be mixed with milk) in my mother's fridge. The carton says to enjoy by November 24, 2010. Normally I don't throw out food based on the suggested use-by date, I use it until my nose- or common sense- tells me it's bad. However, I have no experience with this particular product and I don't ( Read more... )

If it's been refrigerated, I'd guess it's fine. It's basically a syrup solution, and honey and spices can be natural preservatives.

I would pour it out because tea really grows bacteria well once it's been exposed to the elements.

Is it the Tazo mix, or something similar? If so, I wouldn't worry about it, and just make sure to heat it up or boil it real well before consuming it :)

I used to buy chai mix in cartons, and it was never something I felt comfortable using if it had been hanging around for a while. I'm like you - I ignore expiration dates as long as the stuff doesn't set off my ick-detector, but some things I just won't risk it with. Maybe it's because I've seen molds that grow in sugar water and they seriously gross me out. Or because I've had refrigerated tea turn super-funky after a (relatively) short period of time. *shrugs* If it were me, I wouldn't use it.

(This is one of the reasons I don't buy chai in cartons anymore. :)

For sure! So many yummy varieties of loose chai to try. Also: cheaper. :D

Is it opened? If so, I'd toss it. Tea can go disgusting after a bit and it's full of delicious bacteria-feeding sugar.

If it's not opened, I'd enjoy the heck out of it by about seven days after opening.
