I tried to get my boyfriend into more natural deodorant. He can get extremely smelly (although these dastardly olfactory nerves of mine thinks he smells sexy with a bit of a sweat) and he doesn't want to offend. Honestly, nothing really works for him except a conventional deodorant/antiperspirant and nothing gel-like works for him.
As for myself, I don't have to wear deodorant. I've seriously only had BO once in the last 3 years.
I use that--and like you, I try to live a soap-free existence. I don't like Tom's too much, I use baking soda (just plain), and it works way better. I keep a little bit in a small container in my purse in case it gets too warm, and it usually does the trick too.
I don't like Dr. Bronner's because it feels funny to me, and I think made me itchy.
Dr. Bronner's is super concentrated...maybe you could try diluting it first to see if it's less drying that way. Also, I find that no matter what kind of deodorant I use, if I shower at night I'm smelly again by morning. Maybe it's because our bodies are detoxing while we sleep. Either way, I just use the crystal deodorant and switched to morning showers. :-)
I have had a reaction to Toms before that made my pits start peeling. It made them burn REALLY every once in a while too before I realized that was what was doing it. It was the Toms long lasting kind though, Apricot I believe.
