Yeah, I think crates are disgusting too, although I will admit that some dog breeds do need them if there are no other dogs in the house such as Seal's breed does. But my philosophy on that is if you're not going to get a pack of those dogs, then get another kind of dog that doesn't need crating. And if you're creating the dog because it's an energetic breed and your house is too small or you're too old to handle it (like Candy) you shouldn't have that dog either.
I have the opposite view on pet store vs. breeder. Pet stores tend to support puppy mills and good breeders have more than one breeding pair and the bitch isn't pregnant all the time, one litter a year at most. Yeah, pet stores are cheaper, but it's probably for a reason.
I think breeders like that don't exist here, I am of the opinion that everyone in Ohio is out for a buck...nice breeders is an east coast thing :)
There are two people near me who are always selling puppies and they have only one pair of adult dogs...the likely hood they give those dogs a break is not good, I think.
I think pet stores are cheaper because they have a bigger market, more demand, and lower overhead than a private breeder... I dunno, I don't see breeders as a respectable entrepreneurship... mini-puppymills... I expect that from a heartless corporate machine, but not "normal people." That seems sleazier to me...
