Bah. I'll have nuclear over coal any day thank you. And yes, you can place a reactor in my proverbial back yard. If you place it where the housing commission flats currently are I'll be doubly glad, thank you very much.

PMSL!!!! The European point of view brought to you by the grumpy swede! I don't think the idea is to keep using coal, they're trying to use sustainable energy now. In queensland I'm figuring solar and wind power... hydro's not going to happen.

"We're confident that clean coal technology will provide a similar level of greenhouse abatement to that of nuclear generation and in a shorter timeframe."

Clean coal is an oxymoron, not to mention not yet in existence. Nuclear fission is certainly not the final answer, but for the time being, it's the best we've got for mass-scale energy "production" (technically just conversion). I'm all for solar, wind and hydro (and hybrids thereof), and personally I find it somewhat disdainful that Australia with all its sun is lagging behind places like California so substantially, but currently neither of these can compete on the scale of nuclear.

Here's hoping that we get the remaining breakthroughs we need in fusion soon.
