This is one of the most interesting applications I saw over the past weekend:

It takes everyone's vacation photos online, and then uses image processing algorithms to match features and figure out the shape of what had been photographed and the position it had been photographed from.  Then, the pictures are stitched together in 3D so that you can ( Read more... )

I played around with the previous Photosynth client a bit. It was pretty cool, but difficult to naturally navigate through a scene; you had to sort of guess which direction would have a good view reasonably close to the current one. The basic tech was there, but the UI was just clunky. Looks like I'm not the only one who had that impression.
