Kids these days... (people's memories are short)

Every now and then when people complain about the music that "kids these days" listen to, I have to remind them of things like this from the '80s:

It seems as if when people reach the age of 30 or so, they forget everything that happened before age 18.

I forcefully make myself remember so as to not fall into that trap. It also helps me like music I might normally cringe at philosophically upon first hearing it instead of giving it a chance.

I still love this song.

The fact that I have an aural memory plus a visual memory of this song's video is disturbing. The useful things that have fallen out of my head in order to retain this 'information' could probably fill a book. I don't know which is worse: the song, the clothes or the dance moves!

I'm fairly certain I have NEVER seen or heard that before.

I do, however, remember several songs that are nearly as bad.

It's only embarrassing though if I actually LIKED THEM at the time :)

Oh shit... I actually do know this song. And, in my defense, I made fun of it A LOT at the time. I also made fun of New Kids on the Block and the like... so, I feel completely comfortable making fun of today's versions. (Although, I do admit to not making fun of Justin Beiber... have seen and heard enough about him to think he's a good kid, just uninspired music)

Also, sometimes I think people WANT to forget some of the crap they did/listened to... just to embarrassed... I know if I was Tigre or Bunny I would be horrified ;)

I'm sure Tigre and Bunny can be horrified as they sit in their $10,000 leather couches in their Miami Beach penthouse condos.

But seriously, I remember seeing an interview with Vanilla Ice in 2002 or so, where they made him rewatch a live performance from 1991. He admitted he looked quite ridiculous, but I think his music is still listenable even if it's cheesy as hell.

For what they were, I highly doubt they had that kind of $$, much less still have it ;)

Well, Vanilla Ice also raged against his publicity, even at the time. I doubt there is any artist in history that loathes his past the way he does. In some ways it's a damned shame... if he could learn to get comforatble in his own skin, he would be welcomed back into the industry, as he actually is quite talented. Alas, he is such a jerk, due his own insecurities, that no one wants to have anything to do with him.

Good point about pop stars' inabilities to ration expenditures. :-)

Also, I didn't know there was that much history with Vanilla Ice. Now I want to go read about him on wikipedia, though I need to get back to work so I'll have a look later.

For all I actually do remember of the '80s, this song is not in the list. I remember the clothing style, and I think a lot can be said for the flair and sheer bravado that went into the look...

It's true... fashions certainly weren't conservative back then!
