Baki: Coloring tutorial 02

Feb 18, 2007 09:50

This beautiful tutorial was made by painful_memento, so all the credit goes to her. But due to hotlinking, she had to take it down. Luckily, I still had my .psd file.

With permission I'm reposting and rewriting it for her ^^

Program used: Photoshop 7.0
Uses curves and selective coloring.
Not translatable.

Start off with a nicely cropped base.

There are a few situations where your base is dark, like this one. So duplicate your base and set it to Screen. Mine is on 50%. This is optional, I usually skip this step unless the finished product is dark. But play around with it.

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast

Brightness: -21
Contrast: +28

Make a new layer and fill it with #00466E. Set it to Exclusion 74%.

Make a new layer and fill it with #686868. Set it to Color Burn 23%.

Make a new layer and fill it with #52A8E2. Set it to Overlay 23%.

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Coloring

Reds:
Cyan: +41
Magenta: -58
Yellow: -100
Black: -100

Yellows:
Cyan: +100
Magenta: +53
Yellow: -48
Black: +100

Greens:
Cyan: -59
Magenta: +13
Yellow: -48
Black: -84

Blues:
Cyan: +77
Magenta: +100
Yellow: +55
Black: +100

Magentas:
Cyan: -70
Magenta: -17
Yellow: -32
Black: +22

Whites:
Cyan: -53
Magenta: +7
Yellow: -40
Black: -100

Whew! Now make a new layer and fill it with #EE3645. Set it to Soft Light 36%.

Make a new layer and fill it with #F7E2D4. Set it to Color Burn 27%.

Make a new layer and fill it with #005D7A. Set it to Exclusion 23%.

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves

Each Input/Output pair is a NEW "dot".

RGB:
Input: 195
Output: 204

Input: 121
Output: 135

Input: 36
Output: 36

Red:
Input: 109
Output: 142

Input: 49
Output: 62

Green:
Input: 164
Output: 190

Input: 118
Output: 134

Input: 71
Output: 63

Blue:
Input: 171
Output: 170

Input: 114
Output: 120

And you're finished!

with soft light:

These icons work very well with Pinkish/Blue images (Like Ouran screencaps)
However, there are a few situations where they turn out to hazy or too purple. Like the image above. You can reduce the problem by duplicating your base, dragging it to the top, and setting it to Soft Light.
