Orochimayu walked (more like glided) to the cell where the boy was kept and unlocked the door, using a set of seals she had devised long ago for braking and resealing locks. She entered the room, looking at the boy. "Well, now, we seem to have held up rather well, haven't we?" she smirked, chuckling a bit. "Now, I forget," she remarked, turning to Kabumi, "what was his name, again?"
"Haruno Sakurai," she answered on cue, coming up behind the sannin. Kabumi adjusted her glasses so that they weren't slipping off her nose. "Chuunin. Teammate of Uchiha Sachiko and Uzumaki Naruko. Student of Hatake Kakami." She had an information card on this boy, and while it wasn't nearly as extensive as the ones on his teammates, it was still fairly detailed.
"Oh, yes. I remember, now," the pale woman's smirk grew, remembering his rather sad attempt at driving her away some few years before. She looked down her nose at the boy. "And how are you feeling? I do hope you'll forgive us for these rather dreadful conditions," she stated, amusement in her tone.
"You aren't going to get any information out of me." Sakurai spat at the two women, finding a deep source of anger he always possessed able to give him enough strength to insult the two so.
There were many things that Kabumi had anticipated in walking into this cell with Orochimayu. Torture, of course, had been one of them. Orochimayu giving the Haruno boy that seal...had not.
The boy hadn't screamed for long before he'd passed out, which was a blessing, because it meant Kabumi could go to one of her labs and fetch supplies to bring back. There was little she could do for Haruno, besides making him comfortable.
But orders were orders, and now wasn't the time to disobey them. She sat by his side through the night, continually placing and replacing cool, damp cloths on his forehead to try to reign in the fever. When the seal started eating through his chakra, she leant it some of hers, killing some of its appettite.
A one-in-ten chance of survival under normal conditions, untreated. Kabumi estimated that she could bring it up to three-in-twenty.
She didn't know if her efforts made the difference or not, but the fever broke eventually.
The first sound Sakurai made was a shuddering groan. He tried to open his eyes, but everything was hazy and unfocused and even the little bit of light in the room was too much and felt like it burned his eyes.
"Sakurai-kun," Kabumi murmured when he groaned and fluttered his eyelids against the dim light. She shifted by his side, kneeling a little forward so she could position the balls of her feet against the cold floor.
Sometimes afterwards, the one that had been given a seal was...unstable. If he was the same way, she might need to be able to get up quickly. Very quickly. "You aren't dead. Congratulations."
