Hanato missed the grand entrance. Gliding through the forests, silent and skilled, Sasoriza had the distinct impression that she and her puppets were being pursued. Leaving Konoha had been a simple enough matter, she had simply slaughtered anybody who tried to stop her as she made her way swiftly back to the gates. Now that they were in the claustrophobic forests, it was far to easy to sense the disturbances in chakra and air a mile or two behind them - and Sasoriza had been surviving on her instincts far too long to doubt that what they were telling her was fact ( ... )

There was something hard beneath her, and something else around her waist, but she couldn't seem to get her eyes open. She hurt, old wounds protesting about something, but what? Kureno had just told her to sit, it shouldn't have hurt that much...

Kabumi blinked her eyes open, staring incomprehensibly at the hand hovering over her face. Had she just been poked in the nose? Someone was talking, but she couldn't place the voice. She shut her eyes again, and groaned quietly--the smoke she had inhaled had given her such a headache. It felt like someone was trying to claw her skull to shreds from the inside. The sunlight wasn't helping.

...sunlight?

And then her stomach was protesting and she was too busy turning her head to the side and retching--can't vomit facing up, can't drown, can't die like that--to make sense of it ( ... )

Hanato'd be the first to admit he wasn't the greatest ninja in Konoha. Hell, he wasn't even in the top ranks; he was still a chuunin, barely even worth the notice of elites like Hatake Kakami and still less the regard of legends like the Sannin. But he was an Inuzuka, and one of the best of them; and he was, for better or worse, one of Konoha's top trackers ( ... )
