I am currently sitting and watching the election results come in on BBC News 24 and Sky News. Well, not exactly currently, as the television is in the lounge and I am in the hall at the computer. I am also periodically checking boston.com.

Secretary of State?
So, states have one as well?

And what are these questions?

Lieberman (CTL)? I thought he was a Dem or Republican?

Liberman was beaten like a mule in the primary because of his support for Iraq, but it's almost impossible to unseat the incumbet in the US.

Yes -- I think I linked information on that in a previous post. I am currently too worn out to check.

Each state has ballot questions, with some counties or districts within states having some each year as well. You can find Massachusetts' questions here a little over halfway down the page.

Lieberman (CTL)? I thought he was a Dem or Republican?

He lost the Democratic primary due to his continued support for the Iraq war as well as other instances of being in ShrubCo's pockets, so he decided to run as an Independent instead and kept his incumbent seat.

Just checking, it seemed strange.

I always assumed the Secretary of State was akin to the (more sensible title of) Foriegn Minister.

Question Two is Stupid.

What a fabulous start to the night!

Did you see his concession speech? Priceless.

I'd love for a politician, just once, to be completely honest in their concession speech. Just get up on stage, clear their throat, wait for the silence and just say "B@llocks" and walk off. Ha!

Regarding calling the election at 8pm just after the polls closed, I would expect it was due to some extensive exit polling. With one exception (the 2004 Presidential election results in Ohio, which went strongly for Kerry in exit polling), exit polling has proven to be extremely accurate when a large enough sample is obtained. If they had enough exit poll results to make a call, I expect that's what they did.
