So let me start this entry with the disclaimer that I've actually never seen the movie Avatar. (Either movie called Avatar, actually, though for our purposes only the one with the giant blue guys and not the one with the problematically white Inuit really matters.)

Sam's got things--like the body issues, for instance--that are about him being Sam and not about being That Guy From Dances With Wolves. Which makes him a good character beyond the archetype (but also makes figuring out the archetype very confusing for some people, go fig.)
Of course, it all does come back together, and Santana's 'stix thing does make sense, since it's about power for her. She can make the staff utterly miserable and they can't stop her, and every time she makes a boy buy her dinner, she's reminding herself that she has power to take things from him. Breadstix is her happy place because it's the place where, even if she's awful, she's still safe/in charge. And she ( ... )
