Mine Eyes Dazzle

Aug 30, 2005 12:25

I hate having my eyes dilated at the opthalmologist's. Hate hate hate. I know they need to check on my retinas, but what on earth can I do for the rest of the day, sitting around squinting with no ability to focus? I need to prep for class tomorrow, and reading about two pages in a row makes my head swim. I also can't study Torah, update course ( Read more... )

Classical Sufism = nummy indeed. What in particular are you reading?

And I'm glad the illustrated Megillat Esther is tasty. I may have to get that for myself soon...

I was leafing through one of the Classics of Western Spirituality anthologies -- I think it was, in fact, The Knowledge of God in Classical Sufism -- in order to decide what I am sticking where in the medieval mysticism class. It really helped once I started thinking of ma'arifa as da'at and hadith collections as tosefta.

Someday, I will have to find out whether I am the only person who prefers Ibn al-Arabi to Rumi. :)

The illustrated Megillat Esther is really awesome.

When you can see this comment: some places now have drops that undilate your eyes. But they don't seem to offer them, at least around here, unless you are sly enough to ask and make noises about having to drive.

Huh. I made noises about driving and they handed me sunglasses inserts for my glasses. Have to work on that. :)

Is this the Megilla that was on-line last year? 'Cuz that was indeed very nifty.

It's the one sampled here, if that helps any. I only wish they'd made the Hebrew text a little larger in some places; one can't very successfully use it to follow along with a reading.

That's the one I showed my students last year (I was knee-deep in comics research and over my head in my WIll Eisner z"l sqee-ing). Gave it to them when we read the Megillah in Yiddish.

I think the Hebrew detracts from the graphic novel. Too much; but it is lovely art in general.

Have you bought the book? (It's not here yet, or, rather I can't find it here.)

I have. Hence the squeeing. (And I am partial to the shapes of Hebrew, plus I'd love to show that sucker around at Megillah readings. Might do it anyway.)

Won't Amazon and/or JPS ship to Australia? Or is it just prohibitively expensive?
