Disclaimer: I don't any of Skins or any of the characters, although i do wish Lily Loveless was mine ;-)
Summary: The characters are stolen from Skins in order for me to write about something that's gone on in my life recently. These are totally real events that have happened to me, but i'm trying to tell them from an outside narrators angle and keep a bit of distance from them. Hopefully it won't all come across to angsty lol. Don't really know how many parts this will have, depends how ridiculously soap-opera like my life becomes lol.
The walk home was both eternal and fleeting for Emily as she constantly replayed the kiss in her mind. It was so fucking amazing that she didn’t think she’d be able to think of anything else ever, and at the same time she kept thinking over and over that no kiss could ever be better than the one she had shared with Naomi on a cold October night out the front of her house.
Her throat stung from all the smoke she had inhaled that evening, and her head was spinning again after the fleeting sobriety she had experienced earlier. ‘I guess adrenaline outweighs alcohol’ she thought to herself with a small laugh. She’d sure as fuck been running on adrenaline since they’d got off the bus, and now she was on an incredible downer.
The kiss with Naomi was amazing and spontaneous and fucking fantastic, but since then all she’d been able to do was replay it in her mind and think about everything that was going on that could mean that her and Naomi might never be together. Gary being problem number one, she always thought about him as her competition but he’d already won really hadn’t he? After all he was with Naomi, with her in all the ways that Emily dreamed about.
As Naomi had walked into the house, leaving Emily frozen in shock, she could have sworn that she’d seen someone silhouetted in a top floor window. What the fuck would they do if it was Gary? What if he’d seen the kiss? What would happen now? Her mind was all over the bloody place. She needed to stop thinking, she needed to get home to the comfort of her own bed and try to figure this out in the morning.
The only problem with that plan was that she hadn’t anticipated Katie still being up when she got in, or being there at all for that matter. And she couldn’t help but say as much.
“What are you doing here? Thought you’d be off shagging what’s-his-name, or did it not go so well?” She asked Katie as she walked over to her side of the room. When Katie didn’t reply after a few moments, Emily turned to look at her while pulling off her shirt and saw that Katie was staring at her, no she was glaring. “What the fuck is your problem?” She said in the most confident voice she could muster, and when Katie just carried on silently staring at her she sighed and carried on undressing and taking off her makeup.
“Who the fuck was she?” Katie eventually said, with a weird edge to her voice that Emily couldn’t quite figure out. And when Emily just stood silently staring at her in confusion she carried on, “Coz mark says she’s a dyke.”
Emily almost flinched at her sisters words, she knew how much of a bitch Katie was but she couldn’t believe she was so fucking homophobic. The more Katie stared at her accusingly, the angrier Emily became until she practically shouted at Katie:
“What is your fucking problem?” Katie looked too taken aback to speak so Emily just carried on, “Huh? Seriously what is it that’s bugging you so much? Because it seems a whole fucking lot to me like you don’t like that I have friends and a life that has nothing to do with you!”
Emily just continued to stare at her sister with eyebrows raised questioningly, while Katie just sat with a shocked look on her face pressed against the wall, having shifted back a little during Emily’s outburst.
“Jesus fuck, Ems,” She finally said, “I was just saying what Mark said. I dunno why you’d want to hang out with some muff-muncher who’ll probably jump you any minute, that’s all. I’m just looking out for you alright babes.” Katie scooted forward off her bed and crossed the room to Emily’s side to give her a hug.
Emily didn’t hug back, she was still fuming. The idea that Katie was just trying to protect her only placated her a tiny bit so that when she crawled between her sheets, she could only stare angrily at the wall and bite her lip to keep the tears that were distorting her vision from spilling onto her cheeks.
The next morning Emily woke for college feeling just as tired as she had when she’d gone to bed. She dragged herself out of bed, thinking that she’d really fucking love a shower but that Katie would probably have already used all the hot water, and threw a cursory glance around the room the twins shared. As she looked over to Katie’s side of the room, she noticed that her twin was staring at her with the same look she’d had last night, the look that in Emily’s mind was kind of the same as the weird edge to Katie’s voice when she’d questioned Emily about her night with Naomi.
That’s when Emily suddenly realised what it was, what was going on with Katie and why she hadn’t recognised it at first. Katie was scared. Emily hadn’t seen her sister scared since the day James had gotten hit by a car, and the fact Katie was scared fucking terrified Emily and she didn’t even know why.
There was so many things that she wanted to ask Katie in that moment, but instead she just said: “What?”
Katie just shook her head and stood up to leave. With her hand on the doorknob, she turned her head slightly back toward Emily and said quietly “I’m not sure I even know you anymore Ems.” And with that she walked out leaving Emily to think over what she’d just said, as she listened to her sisters receding footsteps.
She had a quick shower, and hurriedly dressed for college, before rushing down the stairs in time to catch up with Katie just as she left the house.
“Katie. Hold up.” She ran through the door behind her sister and feel in step with her as they walked down the drive. Katie didn’t say anything, instead they spent the next few minutes walking in silence until Emily gathered up enough courage to say: “Talk to me Kay.”
“What is there to talk about Ems?” Katie finally said. And when it became apparent that she wasn’t going to say anything else, Emily had to swallow a lump in her throat to force the conversation on.
“Last night, Katie. And what you said this morning.” Emily put her hand on her sister’s arm and turned her so that they were facing each other. “I hate arguing with you.” She said resisting the urge to add ‘but you’re a complete cunt and make it impossible for anyone to not hate you’, but of course that wouldn’t have been very democratic or sisterly.
“It’s just...” Katie said, finally meeting her sister’s eye, “I thought I knew you, I thought we liked the same things, like we’re meant to, like twins are meant to. But now, it seems like we’re not the same at all are we?”
Emily felt tears spring to her eyes at her sisters words, she’d known for a long time that her and Katie were nothing alike and she’d cried when she’d realised, but her sisters sudden realisation was enough to make her want to cry all over again.
“No Kay, we’re not. But it doesn’t mean I don’t love you. We’ll always be sisters, and I’ll always love you, you know that.” Emily said thickly, the lump in her throat becoming sharper by the second until she thought she might suffocate from it.
“Why did you walk her home?” Katie said after a few moments of silence in which both of the twins had been trying desperately not to cry, “Coz it’s not like you’re her fucking boyfriend or whatever, I mean, Jesus, I’m sure she can get herself home.” Emily was left reeling, as her sister just sprung the question on her out of thin air and began to walk as if nothing had happened. As if they hadn’t both been practically in tears in the middle of a busy street.
“I just did, Kay, it seemed like the right thing to do.” Emily replied, trying to keep the panic out of her voice.
Katie looked at her sharply for a minute, she just couldn’t figure out what was going on with her sister at the moment, they’d always been so similar, obviously Emily was a bit of a geek but other than that they’d been into the same stuff, had the same friends. But now, now she didn’t have a clue. That confusion was what led to her asking the next question.
“She didn’t kiss you, did she? Because if she did, then she’ll have me to deal with, yeah Ems?” She worried about Emily, she hadn’t ever really had boyfriends, and she didn’t want some disgusting lezza influencing her sister, because if there’s one thing that Emily isn’t, it’s gay.
Emily felt her breath catch in her throat and her heart rate increase at her sisters words, she could never lie to Katie, she always knew straight away.
“She’s got a boyfriend, Kay.” It was all she could say without actually lying.
“Oh,” Katie replied in confusion, “Mark said that she was a muff-muncher, but I suppose he could have been wrong couldn’t he? But he seemed pretty convinced that blonde bitch tried it on with his sister.”
“Her name’s Naomi.” Emily said through gritted teeth.
“What?”
“That ‘blonde bitch’s’ name is Naomi.” She could feel anger well up inside of her again. She hardly ever got angry, but the idea of anyone insulting Naomi just seemed to bring it out in her.
“Alright, Jesus. What are you in love with her or something? Fucking hell, you don’t have to go off on one at me all the fucking time you know. When did you turn into such a fucking cunt.” Katie said as she stormed off.
All Emily could think as she watched her sister walking off through the crowd was that yes, maybe she was in love with Naomi, why else would she be defending her so fiercely, why else would her heart hurt every time she thought of Naomi and Gary together? It was too fucking much, so she turned on her heel and headed straight back towards home. By the time she got there her parents would have gone to work, dropping James off at school on their way, and she could skip college and spend the day enjoying a bit of fucking peace and quiet.
When she got home, she went straight out to the back garden and flopped down onto the cold grass, this was where she did her best thinking. Maybe she’d even get a bit of gardening done later.
“Fuck.” She whispered to the clouds, relishing in the way her fingers were going numb and her back was slightly damp, it was good to feel something other than the pain that coursed through her when she thought about Naomi.
“First sign of madness, that.” An unexpected voice said from just outside her field of vision. “Second one’s when the voices talk back.” The voice finished with a laugh.
“Guess I must be mad then,” Emily replied “Coz someone’s fucking talking to me right now.” She couldn’t help but laugh now, and pushed herself up on her elbows to look at the blonde that was stood by the gate to her left. They just stared at each other for a few minutes, blue eyes meeting brown, until Naomi walked over and sat on the grass next to the redhead.
“The grass is wet.” She said after a few more minutes, just to have something to say.
“I know,” Emily replied, “What are you doing here? How d’you know where I live?” With every question she asked she thought of another.
“I came to see you, wanted to talk about last night. And you told me where you lived while I was interrogating you last night.” She finished with a laugh. “To be honest I was really fucking hoping you weren’t at college, else this would have been a bloody epic waste of time.”
“You know this is 2009, most people do have mobile phones. They’re really handy actually, you can find out where people are without just turning up at random places looking for them.” Emily was really beaming by the time she’d finished talked, and sat up properly to talk to the blonde girl sat next to her.
“Yeah...” Naomi looked down at her hands as she nervously pulled up blades of grass, “I needed to get out of the house, and well, I didn’t really have anywhere else to go. I can leave if you want some time to talk to yourself.” She finished, trying to lighten the mood.
“No, it’s ok. I think I’d rather you tell me what’s got you showing up at my house at half 9 in the morning.” But she already knew, she’d seen Gary in the window, he’d obviously seen them.
“It’s Gary...” Naomi said with a sigh after a long moment of silence, “I think... I mean... I feel guilty, about what happened last night.” She carried on picking at a piece of grass before chancing a quick look at Emily who was staring back at her with hurt in her eyes. “Not that it wasn’t amazing,” she rushed out, “I just feel bad, you know, doing it behind his back.”
“He saw us, I think.” Emily said, it was the only thing she’d been able to think about as Naomi spoke. The look of shock in the blonde’s eyes made the breath stick in the redhead’s throat. Why did it have to be so fucking complicated, why couldn’t it just be simple, her and Naomi together.
“Oh,” Naomi replied, “I guess this is gonna be a lot harder than I’d hoped.”
Emily started to fell anger well up inside of her for the second time that day, the idea that Naomi was moaning about how hard it was for her to have two people who were crazy about her didn’t quite strike Emily as the worst thing in the world.
“Oh yeah, I’m sure it’s real fucking hard for you.” Emily said sarcastically, pushing herself up off the damp grass.
“What?” Naomi said, still sitting, she didn’t have a clue what had just gotten into Emily.
“You, sat there going on about how hard this all is, did you even take a second to think what this is like for me, huh? All this wondering what we’re even doing, whether that... last night even meant anything to you. Or if you just went straight inside to the arms of your fucking boyfriend.” Emily couldn’t keep the hurt out of her voice now, nor could she stop the tears that spilled down her cheeks.
“Ems...” Naomi could feel her voice cracking too as she got to her feet, “I didn’t... fuck, I didn’t mean to say that this is easy for you but... fuck.” She couldn’t do this, it was too hard, she didn’t even know how to begin to tell Emily how much she meant to her. Instead she just sighed and said “I slept on the sofa.”
“Huh?” Emily asked, she had heard what the blonde girl had said but it hadn’t exactly made sense.
“I slept on the sofa,” Naomi said again, “because I couldn’t stand being near him after what had happened with you. I’ve never felt like that when I’m kissing Gary.”
With that Emily spun round and grabbed the taller girl’s hand, pulling her in close so that there wasn’t an inch of space between them. They stood silently in the garden for a moment, their breath mixing in the morning air, before their lips crashed together. It was like a replay of the previous night but with all the gentleness gone, replaced by passion and longing.
“I can’t stand this, I can’t.” Naomi whispered against the shorter girls lips.
“It’s ok,” Emily whispered back before deepening the kiss. The way Naomi sighed into her mouth as their tongues flicked past each other resonated somewhere deep within Emily, and all she could think was that if she let this end she would regret it forever.
