She didn’t realise that this is what happiness felt like. Complete, pure happiness. The first few weeks of the summer were spent with her and Emily reconnecting, making up for all the time she wasted during the year. If she was honest with herself she would say that she had always loved Emily, always felt that way, just like Emily did for all that time. She wants to kick herself for wasting all that time. Wasting all the happiness she could have had if she had just submitted to her feelings and let her heart take over.

Sometimes Emily will look at her, her eyes telling her everything, exactly how she feels and Naomi knows she has the mirror look on her face, in her eyes. She can’t imagine ever loving someone the way she loves Emily. Even remotely feeling like this, feeling this happy and in love all to one person, unconditionally.

They’ll sometimes lie in bed, Emily’s head on her chest and Naomi, with her arms wrapped tightly around her and just talk all night, into the morning about anything and everything because it feels like they have all the time in the world and can stay up until the sun rises because they just can, because nothing else matters except their tiny bubble of a world that is bursting with love for each other. These nights are Naomi’s favourite, she feels at peace with the world with Emily in her arms just talking and giggling with each other. When she wakes up, always after Emily, she wakes to soft kisses on her collarbone and the sun beaming into the room and making Emily’s bright red hair shine and the feeling she feels is just content. Content with her life because of Emily and a sigh will escape her mouth and Emily will just beam up at her and she just can’t help but smile back because that’s what Emily does to her.

Of course, no relationship is perfect and they do fight and bicker and storm away from each other with scowls on their faces. These are hard days; miserable, unhappy days when words aren’t spoken and kisses aren’t shared. In the end one of them caves and apologises with one simple phone call. In the beginning Emily used to always make the effort and apologise first but Naomi finds herself making the first move time and time again because she can’t seem to be angry with Emily for longer than a day and can’t stand not being with her. She finds that she likes that the tables have turned, that she’s chasing Emily in some way because the happiness is so overwhelming and she doesn’t care and she feels like she owes it to Emily, to keep her happy and never hurt her again. She’d chase Emily across the world if she had to because she is that in love with her and that happy that she couldn’t stand not having her. But she doesn’t think she could ever tell Emily this.

On the rare occasion that Emily doesn’t stay at her house. They spend the night on the phone until the phone call is a yoyo of  “I love you” thrown between the two until they finally hang up to sleep realising they have spent 20 minutes saying I love you to each other. Once Naomi finally goes to sleep, she finds herself restless and unable to properly sleep. When Naomi wakes she finds herself tangled up in her sheets and hugging the pillow Emily normally uses and a smile on her face, only to realise it’s not Emily but inevitably, she has to wait the few hours until it really is Emily. It’s the smell she thinks, if she were blind she’d be able to smell Emily and know it’s her because her smell seems to intoxicate her like nothing else, it’s so pronounced and indented into Naomi’s mind that she wants everything to smell like Emily so she never feels alone.

Naomi finds that the feelings will creep up on her when she least expects them. When she is outback with a smoke lying on her back and looking up at the clouds, each cloud will remind her of Emily and she will need to shake the feeling because Emily isn’t there and she doesn’t want to go through the feeling of pining over Emily and not being able to have her with her. Sometimes Naomi will be eating breakfast with her mum and Emily will once again creep into her mind and her mum will have to shake her after a minute of no response with a simple knowing smirk on her face and Naomi will flush red because she got caught out with Emily in her mind and her mum knows it.

Emily is red and red is Emily. Naomi will see flashes of red and her heart will beat faster, and her breathing will pick up. She has found it to be her favourite colour. Red makes her heart melt and a smile fall upon her face. No red will compare to the red of Emily’s hair. When waiting to meet Emily in town, Naomi will see the red hair first, it’s so unique and so Emily that all Naomi does is smile and she will see the smile mirrored on Emily’s face when they greet with a soft kiss and Naomi will reach for Emily’s hand and begin to walk and the smile won’t leave her face for the rest of the day.

This happiness Naomi feels is something she never wants to lose. She can’t fathom the day that her world may crumble and her heart may break and the happiness will be gone and she will never find it again because Emily won’t be there anymore. She loves her too much and feels too much, so much that it does scare her but when Emily tells her she loves her the fears and feelings go away and fall to pieces because really, Emily will never leave her and she will never leave Emily because they have found something that Naomi believes that it exists nowhere else but in their world. In their special world full of love and the new found happiness that cannot be shaken away because it’s the most wonderful feeling the world.
