Crying With The Classics.

Just finished listening to the movie Little Women on described video service. It's the one starring Janet Lee as Meg, June Allison as Jo, Margaret O'Brien as Beth, and Elizabeth Taylor as Amy. It is familiar to me from childhood, and I had begun rereading the Louisa May Alcott novel recently ( Read more... )

Ahhhhh...Elizabeth Taylor-she was so wonderful in that film. I just adore her, my other favourite of hers is National Velvet...of course Mickey Rooney's good looks may have played a part in my attraction! By the way, "Little Women" with Katherine Hepburn was 1933.

Wow. I love National Velvet, too. Haven't seen it in years. Thanks for the date on the Hepburn version. I hadn't known about that one until finding it on Disney channel.
I figure it must have come out first, but wasn't sure. Surprised they did a remake so soon. They do remakes a lot now, but then, wasn't it rare? Elizabeth Taylor was awesome as Amy, so adorable and in character. I don't remember who else was in the earlier version, besides Kate Hepburn.
Do you know? I think the one after that was by far the better film.

No, I don't know anymore about the first "Little Women", sorry. However, if you liked "Little Women" you would probably like "The Three Musketeers" in which June Allyson plays Gene Kelly's love interest. That's one of my favourites too.

One of the first real chapter books I read as a little girl was an abridged, children's version of Little Women. And I loved it! I found it in a to-be donated box when moving a few years ago and pulled it out and stuck it on my bookshelf. I have since read the full version and it's still one of my favorites -- along with Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird (but that's a whole other conversation!) The only movie version I ever saw was the one from the 90s with Winona Ryder in it. I saw it once, in the theater, and did like it. Of course nothing compares with the book. On Thursday I heard on a radio show that Louisa May Alcott did not want to write the book and only did so for the money. Apparently she found it very difficult to write Little Women. Her passion was writing darker fiction which she did under a pen name as not to embarrass her father. At first hearing this made me sad and a little angry, but now as I think about it I think it's a testament to the beauty with which she wrote because she still wrote such an amazing ( ... )

Thanks for commenting and sharing your passion for this book. You must see the 1949 version when you can.
I didn't see the nineties remake. I usually don't think movies live up to the novels, but this one does.
Anyway, thanks for telling me what you heard about L. M. Alcott. I am always interested in the writer, being a writer myself.
Smile.
I can only blame the Ear for teaching me how to have feelings.
