Why is it that americans seem to overcome their fear of close proximity on the metro? We huddle by the train entrances, packed together, when there is clearly room in the middle of the train. For a society that generally keeps it's personal space clearly defined, suddenly you see people with their noses up someone else's armpit and perfectly happy

i think tzeitel can sympathize. she's taking the metro now to her new job and she's reacquainting herself with the stupidity of metro riders. that, and Belgian metro riders seemed to be smarter about space issues.

add to that the stupidity of Metro, for continuing to use trains with rows of seating instead of wall seating. It wastes so much space!!
