Chapter 7: CAST Off Your Outer Shell

Dec 16, 2011 22:30

[This week has not been ideal for Falk Gatt.]

[Normally, as a CAST, the current hardship Mayfield is forcing upon its "citizens" would not have been a big problem. However, like many others of Mayfield, Gat's been stripped of his CASThood. ... Repeatedly. The RAcast has been finding himself flipping back and forth between the human body Mayfield ( Read more... )

[OOC: Let's say that this is the 15th]

You're going to freeze to death like that.

[Even if, being larger in size than most of the people in Mayfield, he is better insulated against the cold than others.]

[Gat looks up at Bazett after shoveling another load of snow off of the sidewalk.]

Oh, howdy.

[Judging from his facial expression, he does look a bit disgruntled to be out here in the cold. He shovels off another load of snow as he continues responding.]

I never did bother with buyin' winter clothes-figured I wasn't gonna need 'em after havin' my normal body for all these months.

Why did you not buy them yesterday? Your body was already shifting into a human one, was it not? And what about other supplies like food? Even if you theoretically will eat less than others, seeing how you will spend part of your time as a mechanical being, you would still need it for your human body.

[She brings up a good point about the clothes. Gat looks a little embarrassed for not thinking that through.]

You're right, I shoulda thought about it. I've been helpin' with other housework.

[After shoveling another load of snow, he looks back up to Bazett, tilting his head in the direction of the house.]

I ain't th' only undroned person in th' house, mind you. I've been doin' my fair share of grocery runs.

I see. Do you have any alternative sources of heating in your house?

[She knows there are people making and distributing heaters, but she does not know if Gat has taken one or not.]

[Gat shakes his head.]

I've been talkin' with a fella I know. He called around askin' if anybody needed a heater. Hopin' to hear back from 'em.

[His expression sours.]

Would've been nice if our homes came with somethin' like a fireplace, but I ain't seen any.

...I simply built a fire in the living room with my excess furniture.

[And almost burned down her house in the process.]

[Now he's looking over at Bazett incredulously!]

Without any kinda safety measures?

I piled up some non-flammable objects around the fire as a makeshift hearth. However, it still did not work as well as I had hoped.

[There is no phone in Gat's hand. The userpic lies.]

Even if ya managed some kinda fireproof bin, I'd be worried about embers an' sparks floatin' off th' flames.

[A beat.]

I don't reckon y'heard of th' man offerin' to build indoor heaters for folks, have ya?

Yes, it proved problematic when I failed to consider that point.

As for the heaters...I do not know how to use one.

He could prolly teach you how. Th' man's an engineer, an' his stuff ain't that hard to use. Th' main problem I had was jus' gettin' a car battery.

I am afraid that I might damage the heater in the process, though.

[At worst, it could end up like the time Father Kotomine had tried to teach her how to use a phone. The phone had been blown up alongside a fair chunk of the church wall. Her superior, of course, had not been pleased with this development.]

It ain't that hard to operate. So long as you don't try repairin' it yourself, or drop it from a high place, I reckon it'll be fine.

[Tell Gat your dark secrets, Bazett!]

Does it include buttons and knobs? If it does, it might be an even greater fire hazard than burning furniture.

[She has lost count of the times that she has blown up or crushed appliances because she could not figure out how to use them.]

[... Gat actually can't tell whether Bazett is being serious or silly, but he shakes his head chuckling.]

Now, why're you thinkin' that? He ain't riggin' them up with self-destruct buttons or anything.

[... Then again, this is RED Engineer. He just might.]
