Wooooo! My replacement US passport has arrived! Without a large bill for taxes, or a summons or anything. Supremely efficient, and much less difficult than I had hoped.

One less worry making thing before my trip.

you are lucky. Last summer there was a huge crisis because as soon as they announced that people were going to need passports to travel to Canada and Mexico (even though they wouldn't start checking for over a year), surprise, surprise, millions of people applied for passports and there was a huge backlog. Gwyneth had put in hers for renewal before the announcement, but it still took many months to get it.

They realise it is better to issue a passport and then grab you criminals when you to try to fly rather than sending a large bill which will just make you avoid legal authority.
