I cannot find that porting Neko Atsume is an option! I was looking at the menus earlier today. Presumably I could force it by digging out the save file. But there's no obvious intentional port I can see. Am I missing something?

I had resigned myself to starting afresh just a few hours ago.

You can! But not through the game itself, sadly, so no, you're not missing something. I found a good set of instructions here:
