Yeah, at those settings the visuals look even more detailed and "solid" with more depth and contrast compared to everything on High. Ambient Occlusion makes a difference where there are different areas in a collapsed building where there's more or less ambient light- It kinda made me think "hm, this spot isn't as dark as that one, let me hide over there instead..." However, I'm not sure just how much difference it makes universally in-game. It just enhances the feel I guess.

Some settings makes much more difference than others, with different amounts of performance penalty. I tweaked my settings using Nvidia's own BF3 tweak guide http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/battlefield-3-tweak-guide
