A little while ago I realized that I didn't have anyone to phone, meet with, drop off or pick up for the rest of the evening. Of course the rosy glow dimmed quickly when I remembered that the house is a disaster, the tree isn't decorated, the cards aren't sent and I'm up to my ears in laundry, but hey - it was a giddy moment while it lasted

I was sort of surprised when I first ran across this tradition in America. We never did this in the UK.
It does seem like a lot of extra trouble to have to go to right at one of the busiest times of year.

The holidays tend to be pretty surreal around here anyway since in addition to Christmas and New Year's we also have our wedding anniversary, my birthday (Christmas Day), my son's birthday (Boxing Day) and my daughter's birthday (Epiphany). My husband is the only one left out - actually, he's extremely left out since he only has a birthday every 4 years :)
