In addition to serving as a "first page" for my novel for those who choose to read it (and want to bookmark it), I'm going to use this page to make a few statements (mostly to remind myself ( Read more... )

With regards to number one:

Why bother to write a novel if it sucks? There's absolutely no point in going through all that trouble and not having something to show for it that you can be proud of. Furthermore, if you write a novel and it's no good, what have you really learned about writing a good novel...nothing. You say if you succeed you write a good one next year but if you don't have a goal of writing something that's good that you won't have succeeded, and you still won't know how to write a good one next year.

Clearly, Random Anonymous Guy hasn't paid attention to what NaNoWriMo is about. It's about completing the Novel. Can it be done in a Month? Others have, can I? It's a basic assumption that the novels will be crappy (exact question is about half way down). If I try to write something good, and I have in the past, just not this long, I'm going to freeze up, let life get in the way, and never, ever get it done. By letting myself write something that's a cliched piece of crap, I at least get the Novel written. If it's salveagable, I can then edit it into something good. If it's not, I at least can say I wrote a novel.

What's worse than a cliche-ridden, MarySue/GaryStu starring Tolkein rip-off fantasy novel?

A cliche-ridden romance novel. Don't think my main will be a marysue as I've read too many good romances with strong female leads, but if I get stuck, she'll end up one.

And my major grammar faux pas is segments. I don't always write in complete sentances, in fact if my writing has any signature act its my segments. I pepper them everywhere. Editing is for December.

Maybe you should send said internal editor on vacation for a month?

And, Mr. Random Anonymous Guy, the point of writing a crappy novel isn't just to finish a novel. Its to write. To get all the random ideas out of your head and onto paper. So the whole process is less intimidating.
