Summary: Lucinda's in the hospital, feeling blue.

Reid strode into his grandmother-in-law’s hospital room. A silk clad Lucinda Walsh lay on her Egyptian cotton sheets while passing a desultory gaze over the numerous expensive floral arrangements filling the room. She sighed and closed her eyes.

“Good morning, Lucinda,” said Reid.

Lucinda’s eyes flew open. “Well, hello, darling,” she purred. “Aren’t you looking stunning this morning?”

“You know, you don’t have to pretend to be okay around me,” informed Reid. “You’re getting over a virulent strain of influenza. You’re tired, you’re sore. It’s okay to be cranky.”

Lucinda shrugged sheepishly. “I’ve fought corporate raiders and cancer. I don’t like that I’ve been defeated by the flu.”

Reid sat on Lucinda’s bed and took her pulse. When he was done, he patted her on her knee. “It was pretty scary there for awhile but you’re going to be fine. You just need to take it easy for awhile.”

“Taking it easy isn’t my strong suit,” replied Lucinda. “I don’t know what to do with myself when I don’t have a project. I’ve been lying in bed trying to think if there’s anyone I can sue for anything.”

Reid tapped his hand against his thigh. “Well, how do you feel about gearing up for the project of being a great grandmother?”

Lucinda gave a genuine smile. “You and Luke have decided that you’re ready to try for a family again?”

Reid nodded. “We’ve decided that we’ve mourned losing the chance to adopt Sage’s baby long enough. We’re going to see if Jade, Natalie or Faith still want to donate eggs and then look for a gestational surrogate.”

Lucinda waved her hands in the air. “Oh, darling, they’ve decided ages ago that Faith is going to donate the eggs and that Jade’s going to be the surrogate.”

“Far be it for me to interfere with the Snyder women’s plans for my life, but Luke and I are concerned that being a gestational surrogate will be really emotionally fraught someone who will end up being around the kid at every family gathering.”

“Pfft. Jade’s decided that she doesn’t want children of her own. Being a gestational surrogate for you two is something she’s been looking forward to,” explained Lucinda.

“And Natalie’s okay with not being an egg donor?” asked Reid.

Lucinda tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “When Luke was so sick, Natalie had herself tested to see if she’s a match for Luke. She is. The girls decided that since Natalie may someday donate a kidney to Luke that Faith gets to be the one to donate her eggs.”

Reid nervously tapped his hand faster. “Let’s not tell Luke that his little sister is looking forward to being carved up to save his life, okay?”

Lucinda nodded sagely. “He does tend to be dramatic about these things, doesn’t he?”

Reid nodded.

“I’ll try not to be an interfering great grandmother,” claimed Lucinda.

When Reid smirked, Lucinda burst into laughter. “Well, I’ll try a little bit. There is something that I want to advise you on. It’s probably the most important piece of parenting advice that I’m ever going to give you.”

“What’s that?” asked Reid.

“If you have a girl, make sure you don’t hire any hot young stable boys,” sighed Lucinda. “Young girls can never keep their hands off their hot young stable boys.”

“Good to know,” said Reid.

Luke walked into the room. When he noticed Reid, he tried to hide the large cups he was carrying behind his back.

“Milkshakes from Al’s?” asked Reid.

Luke reluctantly nodded.

“She can have a milkshake,” said Reid.

“I know,” said Luke. “The second one’s mine and I was hiding it from you.”
