What is a Game?

Now we move onto the definition of what a game is. I think the best explanation i've seen is:

In the German language a game is any activity which is executed only for pleasure and without conscious purpose. In this definition every activity that brings pleasure is a game. For example, people dance, play musical instruments, act in plays, and play ( Read more... )

Chess, Checkers, Go, Scrabble, Bridge and Memory are all generally referred to as mind games or mind sports (to avoid the double entendre). I'm not familiar with 9 Man's Morris, Halma, Skat, Rummy or Jack Straws, but surely monopoly and parchisi are games of chance, their primary feature being the rolling of dice, as opposed to the decision making of the player. I'm not sure if that's at all relevant to what you're trying to define, but if you call all of these things 'games with rules', surely that qualifies anything with any form of organisation as a 'game with rules'.

Not that it has much to do with this, but I thought this article comparing the most influential figures in various games in regards to the upcoming 'World Mind Sports Games' was pretty interesting.
