It was surprising as hell to find him gentle and careful at any angle, let me tell you . .

(In a sense most-so, here, in this period, because this is before the forced transition to wealth-through-delicacy, as opposed to wealth-through-colour)

I think it was meant in the sense of 'I haven't been around babies/pregnant women in a long time'; I could see her having been someone's regular checkup assistant.

She does, yes, and hasn't varied a lot over the centuries; by the time Sean's king her colour choices are really old-fashioned/traditional. I'm not sure if it's a generational thing, or a leRoux thing.
