Just curious. Does this mean Zhenia has gone after Vasilisa, or is just hoping Vasilisa is back soon? I'm not sure I understand the connection of the last two paragraphs.

Feel sorry for Ilyana though. That sounds ow.

Zhenia is trying to find Vasilisa (so yes, kinda going after her?), but can't go very far before her mother checks up on her.

Having the stepsisters be sympathetic voices is a shift from the fairytale, but I think I'm a lot more comfortable with it than the adoptive family = bad, omg that the original fairytale implied.

*nodnod* good call, i think. just the one adult bad in a room of powerless kids is bad enough, when you drop it into the real. the whole adoptive family ganging up on level of bad would've been...ew. very hard-to-read ew.
