Title: here things begin
'Verse/characters: Wild Roses Wars; Etienne, Nicolai
Prompt: 29A "defying gravity"
Word Count: 1723
Notes: Part of the dragon arc. Follows from collared. I think this is the first time I've actually written Etienne, and certainly the first time writing this particular set of brothers interacting.

---------

Nicolai's letters, Etienne had thought more than once, wouldn't take much work to become either code or easy to transmit by flags. )

dragon arc, first war, nicolai, etienne, list a, wild roses

I'm afraid to say my sympathy is with Etienne here. I'm trying to imagine what response Nicolai would have gotten from Phaedre or Arianhrod for forgetting a spell link.

Assuming their defenses didn't start melting the mountain beforehand.

Oh, it's easy to sympathise with Etienne here--he is nowhere near the mage his brother is so there was a very real possibility of getting Et.

Just at the same time, I know what Etienne (and Nicolai, and various other people) get up to later, as a result of this conversation. And I honestly wish he'd got Et. >.>

Nicolai, while an extremely talented and focused mage, is occasionally . . limited. Which is a contributing factor to various Ugly. =\

The creation of that dragon would squick most other mages.

Close? He neglected to build a proper subroutine into the change-spells that would cover for the emotional response to that brother--since he'd be upset/furious if the dragon pulped Etienne, he forgot that he hadn't actually said so.

:D Nicely read. For all their mess and mutual flail and hiss, there is never a question as to them being a 'us'. Which, if they weren't quite as fucked up, would be quite admirable. >.>
