Jared leaned over the heels of his palms, feeling the wood of the table creak a little under his weight, squinting at the obscured surface of the table without really focusing on anything.

"I can feel my youthful idealism bruising just from hanging around you," a cheerful baritone voice announced from very close behind his right shoulder.

Since he recognised the voice, he didn't bother flinching, jumping or making threats. "I haven't even said anything yet, and you're hardly younger than I am."

"Anything that marks you first counts," Giovanni argued, bumping his own shoulder against Jared's companionably as he came around to look at Jared's notes and map. "Hah! I knew you were up to something, cousin mine, your shoulders never lie."

Making a mental note to start lying with his shoulders at the nearest opportunity, Jared leaned his hip on the table and eyed his cousin. "Are you bored or something?"

"Bored enough to be an audience, not so bored as to be willing to help you take over a small country," Gio replied without looking up. He was poking around the layers of paper and parchment, using his fingers until he found a dry pen to use as a stylus.

"Nah, that's what Dad and Uncle Dón are up to at the moment," Jared told him absently, then blinked as a particular paper surfaced under the levering action of the pen. "Does that actually say 'alligator nest' in your dad's handwriting?"

Gio checked, raising an eyebrow. "So it does. Wonder what he's been up to lately."

"Hernén's project, if everyone else is any indication. Which is why I have this lot in the first place--I'm to be negotiator in Dad's place at that hash-mark in the river harbour there." He pointed at the map, and the pen mark obligingly started glowing.

It stopped when Gio tapped it with the heel end of the pen twice, as absently as Jared had started it. "Huh. Are you bored?"

"Not particularly?" Jared raised his eyebrows interrogatively. "Why?"

"Well, why'd you say yes?"

". . . He asked, Gio. When does Hernén ever ask for anything?"

Gio blinked, then stroked his chin with the hand not holding the pen. "Point to you."

"'ci," Jared murmured, leaning back over the map. "Let me know if you come across a good pen, cousin mine."

"Will do."
