The whole room's frozen, us included. Most of them can't see what I just did--well, what I really did. They can see that I just swung a cheese knife at a man they're suddenly realising they've never seen before.
I'm frozen, too, not cursing out one of m'dame Lehseet's grandchildren because he's not. I've just cut off a stranger's tail--still flopping like an angry fish in my hand--and while he deserved something for the trouble he's been causing I'm not sure he deserved this.
He's still, his pupils blown as round as the mask he's just barely holding onto, looking at nothing but me. Not even the tail in my hand, but me, my face, until his pupils contract down to slits of black in the gold, and he grins for a second before he kisses his hand to me, like he's awarding a point in a game we're still playing, and fades out.
I'm left standing in the middle of a forming swarm of people, asking me who that was, why and how he disappeared like that, am I alright, and all I can do is wonder what in Winter I'm going to do with a fox's tail.
