No one ever actually flat-out said that the ambassador was due sometime today, but when the housekeeper just thinned her lips at the footman who'd washed his hair in woad instead of screaming, I knew.
A few extra splashes of rum in the hidden-away corners of rooms, and I wandered up to the battlements, to watch the arrival. Figured I'd have a long wait as the carriages rolled in from the horizon, long enough to slip down and join the footmen and play a game with the ambassador's luggage. Time to lay tricks around the wheels, or on someone's spit-shined boots.
Serve me right for expecting. I nearly fell off the wall when she stepped out of the air.
She wasn't looking for me, which was probably all that kept her from spotting me right away. The power rolling off her felt like a lightning bolt, every hair on my body standing on end without waiting for my permission. Tangled a few more layers of hiding around myself as she pulled her entourage out like an expert fisherman flipping a trout onto a dock, no wasted movements at all.
First girl ambassador here, that I'd ever heard of--no wonder the humans were upset, even beyond me.
I slid down behind the wall to watch as she exchanged greetings, smiling as one of her followers whispered something in her ear. Pushed, just a little, as the whole group walked towards me, wanted her to pause at the threshold of my current den so I could get a good look at her, not just her power.
She blew right through me, though everyone else paused, her head high as she flicked whirlwinds around the courtyard. All I really saw was that her hair was redder than mine, tied back in a braid, before she was through the door and out of sight.
I walked down from the roof on all four feet, a good half of my tails tied into don't-notice-mes and I'm-not-heres, practically vibrating with the challenge.
The keep's mice had the worst afternoon of their tiny lives.
