Sinclair looked up suddenly, staring into some middle distance Ilya couldn't guess at, then grinned.

"Pardon," he said cheerfully, "I need to go kill a man over a horse."

Ilya nearly spat tea. "You what?"

"Long story that doesn't concern you," the captain said, then slid a few rubles along the table to Ilya. "Pay when they ask, would you?" and walked away.

Ilya stared after his retreating back, deeply nonplused, then looked down at the engineering drawings he'd been studying.

Silver text he hadn't put there was scrolling gently across the screen.

Never get in a staring contest with a man wearing an eyepatch.

He considered it for a while, then keyed up the text function. I don't want to know.

Oh, good. I won't be obliged to lie to you. Take your time getting back; there are some components in the market you may find worthwhile.

. . I really don't want to know, he typed, then rolled the drawings up and stood to pay.
