Cat house, or frat house?

Dec 23, 2009 12:18

One of the choices I had to consider when I moved out was, do I want to take any of our cats? When pie_queen53 and I met, I was a committed "dog person," with little but disdain for cats. But her cat, Spanky, who was about 4 at the time, was a charming little devil who won my heart, and forever changed my attitude towards cats ( Read more... )

I'm sorry to hear that you and pie_queen53 have split up. I hope it wasn't too rough on you.

Thanks. It's rough, and it's not over yet, but it's amicable, and I'm trying to make the best of the situation that I can.

I'm glad that it's "amicable" or as much so as such things can ever be. If love has to die, at least let it be buried in hallowed ground.
I've seen too many relationships die only to become an ongoing blight on the lives of all envolved.

"In the shelter, they were Sam, Apollo, and Kara. Apparently, they'd been found in the Bakersfield shelter (which isn't no-kill) and brought up to SF."

This confused me for a second. Given that Sam, Apollo and Kara were a relationship triangle in Battlestar Galactica 2.0, I thought you meant they'd been brought up with science fiction.

Sometimes this town does seem like someplace out of science fiction...

Congratulations, cat staff person. I swore I was not getting any more cats, not ever, when our much beloved Livingston died. But one morning - there was this black cat on my patio, torn between running into the apartment and running away as fast as possible. The next morning, she opted for running in. Her behavior when I moved (hysteria over the movers - I have never seen a cat go so uncontrollably insane with terror) made it clear that she had been a victim of a foreclosure or an abandonment. However, the drive to Michigan, with 5 motel stops, 2 weeks in a temporary place, 3 months in another, and a repeat drive back, finally to a new apartment, has resulted in a blase traveler who has become very secure. Apparently I"m not leaving her, ever if I am rather peripatetic. I'm glad your two boys have been well cared for and have chosen to adopt you with a minimum of trauma. Happy lap!

Boy, and cat that can survive that kind of trauma is a tough old bird!

Sam and Miles are definitely two mellow cats, at least so far (knock wood!). They must not have suffered much trauma in the early days of their lives, that or the volunteers did a good job socializing them. Their only faults so far are a) they're very interested in whatever I'm eating, and they like to jump onto the kitchen counter whenever I'm doing anything in the kitchen. But, those are pretty mild, compared even to some of the "good" cats I've had!

According to the volunteer at the ACC, when she took them back to their pen after our "get acquainted" playtime, they seemed very disconcerted - like they had already bonded to me, and couldn't understand why they weren't going home with me. That all seems forgiven, now.

And, perhaps an omen: I noticed yesterday that both cats have white front feet, except for the ring finger on Sam's left paw, which is grey...

It's good to hear that:

1 - things are still amicable between you

2 - you're willing to endure the scorn of your neighbors and adopt 2 kitty-dudes...

1. Yes - it could be much worse.

2. Actually, my building has only 3 units. One has a couple probably a little younger than me who just got engaged, and have a cat whom I'll be taking care of while they're gone for the holidays. The other is a couple of young women. Nobody has scorned me so far, and one of my friends went so far as to say that having kitty helps get you kitty...
