My review of The X-Files: I Want To Believe

So, after seeing the movie again today at a local matinee showing, I think I have organized my thoughts enough to write a review of it. Spoilers are, of course, under the cut.

Overall impressions first: despite what CC & co. have said, I don't think it's actually that accessible to a non-fan audience. I mean, I guess if you're really into thrillers ( Read more... )

I enjoyed the movie a great deal, but I agree that I don't think that non-fans will really get much out of it. (Of course...really, how many non-fans did CC really think he'd get? I suppose snagging the people who were too young to watch it at the time who hadn't found it through other means. =) X-Files was such a product of its time that I think this was a good way to return - not to get caught up in the aliens-and-conspiracies again, but to get to the heart of what made the series work, the Mulder/Scully relationship, both working and otherwise. With this being the most explicit manner in which the "otherwise" has ever been addressed, I was pretty pleased. A few scenes dragged, for me, but I think at least part of that was the fact that the theater I saw it in was FREEZING COLD. Perhaps they were realistically trying to simulate British Columbia in the middle of winter. (Bless their hearts, they could tell me that was Virginia all they wanted, but even in the mountains I think that much snow would be an anomaly not the usual ( ... )

Aw man, that's too bad about your theater's BC-in-winter freezingness! (And hee, yep, that... wasn't Virginia. Sorry.)

Yeah, Scully gave William up for adoption towards the end of season 9, but I can see how you would've forgotten - even though that was one of the best episodes of s9, that's not really saying much. Heh.

And also, I understand why you might think they haven't been living together the whole time. They certainly made it (frustratingly!) ambiguous, but I choose to believe they have been. :)
