“It’s a human thing,” Soranik said.
“You don’t celebrate your birthday?” Kyle was finding that hard to believe. Everyone loved birthdays.
“No, seriously. It’s a human thing. Most people just keep the date for their records, but it’s not a cause for celebration.” Soranik was doing something he couldn’t see with a plant; he thought she was trying to grow a garden, but they could very well be herbal remedies for something or the basis for something completely different. All Kyle could tell was that the plants were pretty and that Soranik wasn’t reacting the way she should have been to a wish of ‘happy birthday.’
“But you’re a year older,” he protested. It was much better than the alternative.
“In this line of work, maybe that is a cause of celebration,” she said, not quite under her breath. Given all that had happened in the past few months, it wasn’t like he could blame her for the sentiment, especially when he’d stopped himself from voicing it a few seconds earlier. Then again…
“There, see? No, wait. What?” Were they actually talking about the same thing?
“Oh, Kyle.” She laughed. “Did you know the average term of service for a Green Lantern is just under four years?”
“I… no, I didn’t.” He’d had the ring for longer, and then there were Hal and John and Guy. “That’s just a statistic.”
“Well, what I meant was that you might be right.” She smiled up at him, stalking closer. “Birthdays might be a cause of celebration.”
Suddenly, the gift he’d gone to all that trouble to acquire seemed much less important. “Happy birthday, Soranik,” he said, and blew out the single candle.
