“Gardner, Batman wants you inside - now!” J’onn stalked down the hall, cape flaring in the non-existent wind. It was a rather awe-inspiring and creepy effect, until you considered that his costume was essentially part of his body. Inevitably, the train of thought went from J’onn’s uncannily fine-tuned muscular control to the fact that the current incarnation of the Justice League was run by a Martian nudist in disguise. Guy growled and knocked the train off its tracks, smirking up at J’onn instead.

“Since when did you start carrying messages, J’onny boy?” He’d long since learned that the best way to annoy J’onn was to stay sprawled out in whatever position he was currently occupying with no mental or physical indication of movement. The mental part was a lot harder than the physical, which was probably why that vein in J’onn’s forehead wasn’t twitching.

J’onn raised one eyebrow delicately, giving his face a positively devilish cast. “If you’d rather I inform Batman you’re ignoring his request…”

Discarding his magazine on the floor, Guy stretched and climbed to his feet. “I’m going, I’m going.” He made a point of ambling down the hallway as slowly as he could without being accused of deliberately stalling, slouching against the doorway when he finally reached it. Batman stood inside the monitor room, most of the screens turned off and only half the lights lit.

“Shut the door, Guy.” Bats remained as taciturn as ever, but Guy knew exactly where this little chat was going. He wasn’t going to let Bats have his way without a fight, though.

“What do you want?” Throwing in a smirk for good measure, Guy slouched just a little more blatantly and planted his feet just a little more firmly in the hallway outside the door.

“Don’t make me repeat myself,” Batman said, and the words were not punctuated by the sound of spontaneously forming ice crystals crashing to the floor, but Guy almost looked for them just in case. He’d heard the voice before, though, and it wasn’t that effective. He still wasn’t going to close that door.

“I ain’t one of your little boys, Bats.”

“And I am not in the mood for games, unless you’d rather the entire embassy hear this conversation.” Batman smirked, just barely enough to be visible beneath the pointy cowl.

Guy scowled; by resorting threatening him with the rest of the team, Bats was cheating. He shoved himself off the doorframe, shuffled sulkily into the room, and let the door slide shut. “Fine, fine. Happy now?”

“I’m Batman. I’m never happy.” The smirk was wider now, and it was not a pleasant expression on the Batman.

“Oh, fuck off.” Leaning against the closed door wasn’t as satisfying as leaning against the doorway, but it was almost as far away from Batman as he could get without looking like he was trying to keep his distance.

“Nice choice of words.” Batman actually smiled at that, and Guy’s ring sparked in response. “Take off the ring.”

“Now, wait just a minute -“ Guy didn’t so much distrust Batman as prefer to keep a weapon on hand at all times within arm’s reach.

“Unless you want the walls to come crashing down,” Batman said, invoking their teammates again. Guy decided that cheating twice in the space of two minutes was not only unfair, it was unBatmanlike. He slipped the ring off and tucked it into his pocket, at which point Batman tackled him.

Guy hadn’t gotten as far as he had without some brawling instincts, and he was able to roll with the tackle. He still ended up on the bottom, but a solid right hook to Batman’s jaw was enough to get him the space to regain his footing. Batman didn’t go far, but he waited for Guy to secure his balance before feinting with his left fist and then sweeping Guy’s legs out from underneath him with a low kick.

“You ain’t getting away with it this time,” Guy growled, hand enclosed in a swath of cape. He tugged at it, and Batman staggered. It was only slight loss of balance, but Guy used the distraction to aim his boots at Batman’s ankles. He might have guessed that Batman would jump over the clumsy kick, but it provided enough of a distraction for him to scramble to his feet again and reach for the single chair in the room. He’d intended to throw it at Bats, but Batman grabbed him by the collar and despite a brief flailing scuffle, Guy found himself pinned to the floor and unable to move.

While there was no way he would ever admit it, this was his favorite part. “Do you give up?” Batman asked, voice almost soft. Guy just glared at him in response, and when Batman produced the lube from somewhere in the near-infinite pockets of his utility belt, Guy struggled harder. Batman smirked, the corners of his mouth as always turning up into the only genuine smile Guy ever saw on his face for just the briefest of seconds. The sight was both infuriating and incredibly sexy. Guy grinned in response, pulled a fist free, and cocked it back.

In the common area below the monitor room, the crashing was clearly audible. Plaster dust drifted down from the flaking ceiling, and the Blue Beetle brushed it out of his hair with irritation. “What happened to one punch?” he grumbled, stalking across the room.

“Maybe Guy’s just slow to learn,” Booster Gold suggested, moving over to make room for his best friend. “Thick skull and all that.”

“Every week?” Beetle complained as another particularly loud thud shook the walls. “You’d think one of them would have learned something by now.”

“As long as you don’t say that where Batman can hear you,” Booster said, waving his hands in a shushing motion.

“Batman can hear you,” said a voice from the door, and they both jumped. A swirl of pointy cape was all that met their eyes before Batman was gone and Guy strolled into the common area with no signs of having just been scolded.

“I told you,” Booster whispered out of the corner of his mouth. “Thick skull. Lots of lessons.”

The answering smirk on Guy’s face could have meant anything.
