female = Mary Sue, male = Gary Stu. Basically, any character who is Practically Perfect In Every Way, save occasionally for some endearing flaw which they are able to heroically overcome Just In Time To Save The Day! every single time.

Yeah, it's true, Tohru is a sue. She cries in every volume, and in every chapter, and it gets annoying. That's why I stopped reading.
