ENTRY #04 FROM THE PRIVATE WATCHER'S DIARY OF RUPERT GILES.
Willow.
Willow Rosenberg. That is the name of Buffy's closest female friend.
Willow? It is not quite so strange a name as Buffy, but even so, why cannot Americans give their children normal names?
And yet, as with Buffy, I find the name suits Willow.
Willow is one of the friends whom Buffy involved in vampire slaying.
I had been determined the incident would be a one-off and that Buffy's friends would not be involved again. However, once I spent time with Willow, once I got to talk to her, once I got to see just how intelligent, how loyal, how useful she was, I decided to allow Buffy to involve her.
If only Buffy applied half the amount of zest to her Slaying studies and duties as Willow does to her schoolwork, I would be a very contented man. It's not that Buffy doesn't apply herself, she does. It is just she somehow lacks the passion, the enthusiasm I would like to see in her.
Willow's particular gift, her area of expertise, is her computer knowledge. I myself confess to being more than a little afraid of computers, I much prefer the feel and smell of books; computers are far too new and odourless. I try to tell myself they are just a fad, something that will fade away, but alas, I know I am only lying to myself.
Willow, however, can make them do whatever she wishes them to do. Maybe I should be a little more cautious though concerning what I allow her to do. I am not altogether certain what the Watchers' Council would say should it become known quite to what extent Willow is able to 'obtain information'. In fact I am not altogether certain what the Watchers' Council would say if they knew I not only allowed non-Slayer personnel to be involved, I now encourage it.
But I do know. And that is why they can never find out. Buffy needs me. Buffy needs my kind of training. And also, as much as I am not sure I wish to confess it not even here in my private diaries, Buffy needs her friends to help her function as a Slayer.
So I shall go on encouraging Willow. But I must ensure the day never comes when her involvement, and that of Buffy's other friends, is discovered. The Scoobie gang must never become known about.
