have a sweet dream

It goes like many scenes in films he has watched for his class.
Jinyoung’s at his second cup of coffee when the bells chime, signalling a new customer coming in. So he looks up out of curiosity, or maybe he just needs another petty excuse to tear his eyes away from the notes he’s supposed to be studying. But the person who just walked into the cafe turns out to be no petty excuse.
He’s seen her before, he thinks, but not quite sure whether he knows anything else beyond her face. Cupping his chin in his palm, with elbow resting on the table, he continues to gaze at the girl, at the same time he tries to recall if he has ever heard of her name.
He's already completely forgotten about his notes now.
The clock struck midnight a long time ago. Aside from the two of them and the two staff behind the counter (one of them has already fallen asleep the last time he glanced at their direction), there is no one else in the café. Then again, no one needs coffee at this hour, except maybe for people like him.
At times like this when he really needs a good place to be left alone with good coffee that is not premix, he’s grateful this cafe that opens till the early hours exists. It gives him the space he wants when he prefers to be by himself to focus on whatever work he has. This time it gives him the break he needs.
Perhaps it's the excess caffeine in his system, but Jinyoung decides to take a chance.
“Hello, um... ca- do you mind if I sit with you?”
Talking is never his forte, but the girl doesn’t seem to be bothered by it, though she does frown at him.
“I go to the same university as you… Howon? I’m not sure if you’ve noticed me before, but you’re reading my favourite book.”
It sounds hella cliché, Jinyoung thinks quietly to himself, a little regretful that it might have come off different from what he intended, but it is one of the books he has enjoyed reading.
The girl smiles and tells him it’s okay to sit, but apologizes for not remembering if she’s ever seen him before. “Do we come from the same faculty?” she asks, but soon laughs at herself silly because of course they would have at least recognized each other well if they do.
From one thing to another, their conversation flows smoother than he imagined. She has a queer sense of humour, and a habit of biting her lower lip when she can’t think of the word she wants to use. Jinyoung also notices that she is careful when she laughs so it doesn’t get too loud and that she may disturb the others (just the sleeping staff, he thinks), and wonders how it sound like normally.
He tries to imagine her during the day and in different seasons. She is wearing simple faded jeans paired with a navy plaid shirt with bits of white and maroon. Does she wear this kind of outfits in normal occasions? When attending lecturers or hanging out with friends? He wonders if she wears dresses too from time to time, though he likes how she appears to be laidback and somehow resilient (he means it in a good way) like this.
Eventually they get to talking about the book she was reading, and it’s kind of funny how they took so many detours before finally going back to the very point where it all began.
“Do you think a relationship like that can really exist in reality? One where you stop living although you’re still technically alive because your other half is gone?”
“I don’t know, but I don’t want that. If there’s a person who loves me as much as Naoko loves Kazuki, or at least has that special bond with me like they do, I wouldn’t want them to stop living just because I’m not here anymore. I don’t want them to feel bad for being happy without me.”
And then they would go from there. He would walk her home, or to the nearest station at least, and they would make a promise to meet up again whenever. Even if they don’t, they would still meet up, perhaps in a café like this, or at the cafeteria in between classes, and talk about anything and everything. It would go on like many scenes in films he has watched for his class and in his free times.
But it doesn’t.
When Jinyoung snaps out of his reverie, he notices a man sitting with her. There’s another book along with another cup of coffee on the table, but his gaze is on her. Jinyoung smiles to himself and stretches his arms, before motioning to one of the staff (both of them are awake now) for more coffee, this time to go. He starts gathering his notes while waiting.
It’s almost three in the morning. More caffeine in his system is a bad idea especially when he wakes up later, cranky and kind of hangover, but he needs it now so his mind doesn’t play tricks on him again, like it just did.
He glances at the girl again on his way out, and notices that the book she was holding is not his favourite after all. He keeps his stare on her for a good moment, Suzy, he remembers her name now, the prettiest girl in Bioengineering, then looks away.
Seoul is chilly at night, even with warm coffee in his hand. But the biting cold keeps him awake, so he figures it’s not that bad. He shoves the other hand into his pocket for warmth. It’s all good.
