You should think of all this effort as an investment, for when Blue grows up and you two are old, and he can take care of you, and bring you your grandchildren to visit.
I love our little dog, he's the best. Pets are documented stress-relievers, that's why we have a service dog for our program. People calm down around animals (if they like them). So despite the vet-visits, he's worth every penny we spend. B/c Spen and I will be crabby, stress, and tired, then we play with our dog and grin at each other like idiots. Plus he's adorable with his little squeaker elephant.
And if Blue has children despite his neuteredness, I'll be appalled.
