The media likes to use the word sex scandal to take the sting out of it IMO. The media and the general public still want to be coddled and told it really isn't that bad even with something like this. It would be nice for once to see the media deal with situations like these maturely and with the seriousness it deserves. If they can't be comfortable addressing horrifying events like this frankly, no one will ever properly deal with it or take measures against it until it's too late.
ETA: I agree with your post and I think there are so many levels to their cowardice its shameful.
