I know what you mean. I do my best to be a guide to my kid, but still let them find their own path in life. Still, there are things I get hard nosed about. Everyone HAD to take swim lessons each summer, and everyone has to get their drivers license. (Sendra is fighting me HARD on the last one)
No lip or eyebrow piercings. (I don't like them) No motorcycles *ever*. There are some fashion items that I refuse to buy - I can't recall what they were, but Sendra and I have fought about stuff.
It seems silly to have some of the minor sticking points - but I figure that its my prerogative to be a typical parent from time to time.
I think a lot of parents get caught up in this fallacy that when their teen or adult kids make choices that are different from their own, they feel it invalidates or dismisses the parents' advice and opinions.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. My mom acts like it's a personal attack when I don't follow her advice, or make the choices she would have made if she were me/the ones she wishes I would make.
