You'd get quite the argument about what 'brothers' means in Modern English usage if you went to any number of neighborhoods in Black America. This also would apply to 'blood brothers', I imagine...

But since I'm a whole ocean away from such exemplary given neighborhoods, and so are you, it's just my inner sarcastic geographic geek coming out :P

The Black American usage does use 'brothers' as 'blood brothers'. They treat each other {or mean to imply} like there's a very strong connection between them.
