Well you know, when you grow up in a predominately christian-based society, you do hear a lot about Israel, but in the context of it being a major place in Christianity. So I don't think it's quite that unusual for people not to know.

Oh dear. But the news is full of stuff about Israel being a Jewish country, and Arab-Israeli conflict going on right now being largely based on religion, and anti-Semitism directed against Israel, and... I know it's in the Bible, but the Bible also talks a lot about it being the Jewish homeland.

I dunno, I guess considering its importance in world politics right now, I would hope more people would be aware of one of its more important characteristics.

To be fair, a lot of Christians live in Jerusalem. And it is a holy place for Christians. But isn't it common knowledge that Christianity is based on Judaism, and Israel is holy because Jesus was born here?
